What the Writing Task Asks For

There's no strict word limit, but from what I found, 250–350 words is the typical range that gives you enough depth and variety to reach TDN 4. The assessors look at: (1) Gesamtzusammenhang—coherence and structure; (2) Sprachliche Angemessenheit—academic vocabulary and sentence variety; (3) Inhaltliche Vollständigkeit—all parts of the prompt addressed. Structure That Scores TDN 4
What worked for me was sticking to a clear TestDaF essay shape:
- Introduction: Define the topic or problem and why it matters. Lead into your argument.
- Main body A (information synthesis): Summarise the given data and viewpoints in your own words. Don't copy the prompt.
- Main body B (argumentation): State your position clearly. Give at least two arguments and one counterargument (with a short refutation). Add examples where you can.
- Conclusion: Summarise your main points, then a short outlook or recommendation.
Without paragraphs and without a counterargument, I was told I wouldn't reach TDN 4. So I always plan these four blocks before I start typing.
Template (Intro, Body, Conclusion)

Common Mistakes
These are the mistakes I made or saw others make—they cost points:
- Copying the prompt: Paraphrase and summarise. Copy-pasting from the task leads to a big point loss.
- No structure: One block of text with no clear intro/body/conclusion rarely reaches TDN 4. Use paragraphs.
- Missing parts: No counterargument or no summary of the given data. Both are expected for a full TDN 4 writing response.
- Colloquial language: Avoid Sachen, super, total. Use Sachverhalte, hervorragend, äußerst instead.

Exercise 1 – Introduction
Words to use: Relevanz, Debatte, Problemstellung, Standpunkt, zunehmen.

Exercise 4 – Conclusion (reorder)
(A) Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Digitalisierung nicht aufzuhalten ist. (B) Daher sollte die Politik verstärkt in die Infrastruktur investieren, um allen Bürgern faire Chancen zu ermöglichen. (C) Trotz der genannten Risiken überwiegen die langfristigen Chancen für die Gesellschaft.
Correct order: A → C → B (Summary → Weighing of arguments → Recommendation).
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the writing task?
You have 60 minutes total for both writing tasks in the digital TestDaF. I split my time roughly: 10 min planning, 20 min Task 1, 25 min Task 2, 5 min check.
Can I use a template?
Yes. A structural template is recommended for time management. Adapt the content to the specific prompt; don't copy the same text every time. I used the template above and changed only the topic and arguments.
Is the digital test easier for writing?
It depends on your typing speed. You use the center's German QWERTZ keyboard, so if you're slow or unused to umlauts, practise before the exam. I found the digital format clearer for editing and word count.
What if I don't finish?
An incomplete text rarely gets TDN 4, because the conclusion and full evaluation can't be shown. I always made sure to write at least a short conclusion even when time was tight.
